Do your children contradict everything you say? Do outside influences attack the values you hold most dear and are trying hardest to instill in your children? Like many parents, you may feel you are fighting a losing battle against the overwhelming outside negative influences in our society. For many of us, our children need go no further than the remote control to see negative moral and ethical behaviors. A television is a window to the world.
TERRY RISKE, MD
TV brings us sights and sounds that would be unimaginable to previous generations. Unfortunately though, television is a two-edged sword. Television and the Internet are windows to the world, but when they are open they expose our children to varying degrees of shocking media violence. Television bombards us with shows that assail our decency and numb us to pain and suffering. Statistics indicate that our children will experience 16,000 murders and 200,000 violent acts before they reach age 18. They will spend more time watching television (approximately 28 hours per week) than they will attending school or listening to their parents. No wonder this medium has such a powerful impact on our children. Here is my story..
